Each early June since 2008, Umeå Institute of Design arranges this inspiring design event in connection to the opening of the Student Degree Exhibition. The purpose of UID Design Talks is to establish an open and inspiring environment for interdisciplinary discussions on design, by gathering speakers and participants from various fields and professions with an interest in the future of industrial design.

During the UID Design Talks, design professionals, students, alumni, researchers and company representatives meet on informal terms and participate in the talks, presentations and workshops aimed at exploring industrial design from various perspectives.

UID Design Talks has the explicit purpose of building international and national networks with Umeå Institute of Design, in northern Sweden, as a central hub. The students, staff and cooperating external partners at Umeå Institute of Design have their roots in all parts of the world, and at UID Design Talks there are great opportunities of meeting new disciplinary and cultural perspectives on design.

At the centre of the rapidly growing Campus of Art and Design, Umeå Institute of Design is neighbour to Umeå School of Fine Arts, Umeå School of  Architecture, Umeå University Museum of Contemporary Art and Visual Culture and HumLab-X platform for the humanities and new media, which opens up for a truly multidisciplinary approach to design issues for the future.
